For Mother’s day, my husband bought me a potted plant. This in and of itself is slightly humorous since I have the blackest thumb on the planet. If a plant comes to my house, it’s on death row. This plant, however, has thrived, despite the lack of water. It’s bright orange flowers actually do look nice on my front porch.

A week ago, my daughter noticed a bird in it. We watched the bird, a robin, for a few days and she and her mate built a nest right in the potted plant. My husband decided we’d sacrifice the plant–as if there was any real hope for it’s survival anyway–to save the birdies.

If you look closely, you can see Momma Bird watching you.

Yesterday, daughter #1 was taking pictures of flowers when she discovered Mrs. Robin sitting in the nest. Apparently, she got too close because Mrs. Robin went a little crazy, flapping and chirping, scaring my dear daughter nearly out of her wits.

It was hilarious!

That’s when we discovered Momma Bird was protecting her eggs. We caught her keeping a sharp eye out.

This made me think of the many ways I protect my own kids, from seat belts to prayers and everything in between, women have an innate drive to protect the innocent, to help them grow. It’s not just in our human capacity, but in the wildlife around us. Everywhere we look there are strong women keeping watch over the innocent and vulnerable.

Male or female, tell me one way you’ve been protective.
