The saga of Momma Bird continues. For the last few weeks we’ve watched as the pair of robins built a nest, laid eggs and hatched

those eggs in the hanging basket on our front porch. It’s been fun watching how Momma Bird and Poppa Bird have taken turns sitting on the nest and finding food. We can tell when someone gets to close because they chirp loudly at our presence.

One afternoon, the hubs and I were on the front porch chatting when Momma Bird went crazy! She flew around, flapping her wings and chirping before she swooped at the porch steps. When I went to find out what she was looking at, I found our cat lurking under the porch.

Momma Bird knew there was a danger near her babies and she was willing to sacrifice herself to keep her babies safe. Our cat is a hunter. We have a tally of her kills, which includes countless mice and moles, several birds, a bat, a snake, and even a baby turtle from the creek behind our house. Maybe Momma Bird knew through word of beak that the assassin was near. Who knows.

I’m amazed that throughout the animal kingdom, moms do crazy things to protect their children. I’d do it. Don’t mess with my kids! And Momma Bird does it. Nature amazes me.

I want to hear from you. Tell me your own Momma-bear story. Did you attack a cat assassin to protect them?  How have you protected your kids?
