This week’s Friday Fights features my dog, Ruby.

I’ve been working on a new story called the Phineas Project. Just sent it off to Mr. Agent Man at Wordwise Media Services. In the story, there’s a crazy healer who lives in the mountains with her dog, Ruby. Ruby helps by killing groundhogs and bringing them back for dinner. (The story is a bit twisted, but super fun too.)

One question all authors get is, “Where do you get your ideas for characters?” The answer is “Everywhere, but especially the people around us.” The same is true with animals. In this case, Ruby the dog is based on my dog of the same name.

She’s a mutt who’s getting up there in years, but ever since she was little, she’s killed groundhogs. Like multiple kills every summer. She’s really good at it and is always proud of her kills. She’ll even drag it around for a while to make sure you see it.

Look at how proud she is. She’s even smiling!

One day several years ago, I was walking through the house after shutting off the lights to go to bed. I heard a weird munching sound and was like, “Oh great. Ruby’s going to puke.” I flicked on the light, and there, lying on my dining room floor, was a dead groundhog.

I freaked.

A lot.

That was merely the beginning. As I said, every summer, she kills several groundhogs and this summer she’s on her third.

So I thought I’d share a bit of my life and how it enters into my writing. And of course, I needed to brag about what an awesome dog I have! If I ever have to go live in the mountains after an apocalypse like my book character, I’m bringing her with me.

Yum, Yum. Dinner.

Beware, groundhogs! Ruby lives here!
